And that's precisely what?James?Taylor?has accomplished with his brand-new album,?American Standard. Recalling the best of?James' early work, he infuses new sounds and fresh meaning into these timeless works of art. While these 14 carefully chosen interpretations naturally feature?James' warm, one-of-a-kind vocal ability and incomparable musicianship, what makes this collection so unique is the inventive way?James?and his fellow co-producers, longtime collaborator Dave O'Donnell and famed musician John Pizzarelli, approached the project. Unlike most who have tackled similar material,?American Standard's?beautifully simple, stripped-down arrangements are based on?James' skillful acoustic guitar work rather than piano and the affect is mesmerizing.

American Standard?is the follow-up to?James' first-ever #1 album, 2015's?Before This World. Rateliff’s warm baritone, ranging from gently hushed to a guttural howl, imbues these superbly drawn character studies with raw, naked emotion. And It’s Still Alright was produced by Rateliff, Night Sweats’ drummer Patrick Meese and James Barone of the indie band, Beach House and primarily recorded at National Freedom in Cottage Grove, Oregon, the studio formerly owned by the late Richard Swift (who produced both Night Sweats recordings). While Rateliff, Meese and Barone handled much of the album’s instrumentation, several friends make contributions including Night Sweats’ guitarist Luke Mossman; bassist Elijah Thomson (of the indie band Everest); keyboardist Daniel Creamer (of The Texas Gentlemen); steel guitarist Eric Swanson (touring musician for Israel Nash) and renowned string arranger Tom Hagerman (of the instrumental vocal ensemble DeVotchKa), whose delicate orchestrations beautifully complement the album’s deep emotional terrain.

And It’s Still Alright’s many highlights include album opener “What A Drag,” which sketches a vivid portrait of a disconnected relationship, “Tonight #2,” a haunting, end-of-the-world waltz, “Time Stands,” detailing an epic, desperate struggle for love and the elegiac "Rush On," a heart-breaking requiem for Swift. Produced by Matt Marinelli (Bad Brains), The Order of Time features twelve original songs. Musically, June has refined and expanded her sound on the new album finding space from her previous work in its artful, self-assured restraint and overall cohesion. The collection’s finely sketched character studies brim with richness and detail while June’s ethereal, wide-open soundscapes provide a sterling backdrop for her remarkable Southern gospel and honey voice. Here, the line “I am the mother of the evening star / I am the love that conquers all” is “the most defiantly triumphant, hopeful line I've ever written...that's about the birth of my daughter and how that transformed me.” Though they had a fraught relationship, Russell remembers how she’d crawl underneath the piano and listen to her own mother play. “I would hum along with her,” Russell recalls. “She said I was humming before I could talk. Morgan's writing has always felt real, offering up some of the genres better moments with 2005's Karma and Effect and 2007's Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces. With this opus, Morgan has again struck a chord. "Desire for Need" is a four-on-the-floor rock joint that finds Morgan reaching for falsetto, which adds an alternative, bluesy vibe to the song's feel. Tunes like "Country Song" and "Master of Disaster" are stamped with Dale Stewart's sexy bass grooves as well as anthemic vocals. On the latter, Morgan's vocal melody actually takes on a Queensrÿche feel. One shining moment is the ballad "Pass Slowly." Musically, the band lays down an ethereal groove that reaches its pinnacle behind well-built guitar and bass riffs. Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray is another journey into the mind of Shaun Morgan: through heartbreak and rebirth he still has a lot to say about betrayal. His stamps as guitarist, a songwriter, and a lead vocalist are everywhere on this disc, and thankfully, that's what ultimately drives the release home. - Steve Losey (AllMusic.com)

TRACK LIST:

1. They’re a band that puts the pain back into music, and a really messy year as an outfit has given them some real reasons to be angry. Seether is only a three-piece, having lost backing guitarist Pat Callahan after 2005’s Karma & Effect, but the guitars are more reinforced than ever, giving the songs an extra edge. On the bass-driven single “Fake It” Morgan sounds genuinely bitter, spitting an accusatory rant that ranks among the band’s best. Songs like “Gasoline”, “Driven Under”, “Broken (ft. Amy Lee”), “Rise Above This” and “Country Song” are staples in radio rock. Their “greatest hits” collection, titled “Seether 2002-2013” contains every one of these, but there is a second disc, which makes this release a bit more interesting. On it, we have 3 new tracks and several b-sides. They decided to cover their namesake track, Veruca Salt’s “Seether” and throw their personal flavor into it. As they did with George Michael’s “Careless Whisper”, you can definitely feel the Seether vibe on this cover. The 2 other new tracks, “Safe to Say I’ve Had Enough” and “Weak” are similar in design, but definitely a reminder of how incredible and diverse this band can be. “Safe to Say I’ve Had Enough” is acoustically driven, but explodes in the chorus with Shaun Morgan’s incredibly familiar warcry like vocals. “Weak”, on the other hand, is slower and will remind fans of tracks like “Sympathetic”, and some of the slower tracks on their “Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces” album. These 2 tracks are a reminder of how incredible this band is and how much they can adhere to their sound, while finding ways to experiment and keep fans guessing. To my surprise, though, they added one of my absolute favorite Seether tracks, “Out of My Way” (originally on Disclaimer II). It’s an incredibly edgy, angry and underrated track that really shows some of the power that Shaun’s voice has.

Just when you think you’ve got this disc figured out, it goes and throws you a curve ball. A “Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces” b-side called “Blister” hits your ears. Slow, beautiful and melodic, reminiscent of “Driven Under” in some ways, but would have fit perfectly as a bonus track on FBINS. The demos at the end of this disc are pretty incredible as well. Starting with “Burn the Bridges”, progressing into “Butterfly With Teeth” and ending with “Melodious”, it really gives you an idea of how incredible this band can sound, even in a rough setting. Butterfly With Teeth is definitely one of the most beautiful tracks I have ever heard, in terms of instrumentals and lyrics. It showcases the band’s softer side and might even make you shed a few tears! Melodious was a perfect pick to close out disc 2, as it feels like an outro track, rather than an album track. It’s not a filler, but it doesn’t have enough album-like quality to be thrown into the mix with any other album track. That’s not to say it’s a bad track or unworthy of your attention, because it’s definitely one of the best considering it’s a demo.

If you are now or have ever been a Seether fan, “Seether: 2002-2013” is a must-have for your collection! On Seether's 2011 opus, Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray, disillusionment, anger, and pain are central themes.

TRACK LIST:

1. While Seether's approach at times hearkens back to the Seattle sound of the early '90s, especially with Morgan's deep guttural moans which are more than slightly reminiscent of Pearl Jam's frontman Eddie Vedder, their nu-metal punch, nonetheless, adds a fresh sheen to an already familiar sound that has come and gone. - ConcertLivewire.com

TRACK LIST:
1. The process had been simple: we would gather around a coffee table on the lawn, Lukas would present a new song on an acoustic guitar, and then we’d go inside and roll tape. The atmosphere was joyful and mellow, yet intensely productive—we rarely spent more than two takes on a song before moving on to the next one. It was so productive, in fact, that there was simply no way to fit all the material on one release. So think of this project as something of an epilogue to our previous album, Turn Off The News (Build A Garden). Some of these tracks are alternate performances of songs from that record. Others, like “Bad Case”, appear in their early developmental stages. But the majority of this album comprises songs that, for one reason or another, didn’t make the final cut, and yet were just too special to keep to ourselves.

Some strings are out of tune. Some lyrics are inconsistent. There’s microphone bleed, tape machine buzz, conversations and laughter between takes… that’s how we like it. Produced by GRAMMY Award winning producer Dave Cobb, the album was inspired by the stillness Nelson found while riding out the beginning of the pandemic with his family in Texas and was recorded with the full band live on eight-track tape over three weeks at Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A. The eleven songs reveal what it means to come home again, to be still, and to find community—and yourself.

“I’m from what one might say is the ultimate road family—I’ve been on the road my entire life,” shares Nelson. “I’ve never been anywhere longer than three months, and suddenly here we are, the four of us together. And thank god we were together. I can’t remember the last time we had that much time together as a family. We had a lot of really important bonding that happened during that time. And I have to say, as terrible as the pandemic has been in so many ways, for my inner peace, I was able to take a lot of good from this time. I was able to pause and reflect.”

He continues, “It took me a really long time to come back to the home in my heart. In a physical sense, that’s Texas and Hawaii. But in a spiritual sense as well—I think I finally decided not to run from who I am and who I am destined to be. First and foremost, that’s a songwriter. That’s what this record means to me. There’s a story being told through the whole record. A story about connection and coming home.”

TRACKLIST

We’ll Be Alright

Perennial Bloom (Back To You)

Throwin’ Away Your Love

A Few Stars Apart

No Reason

Leave ‘em Behind

Wildest Dream

Giving You Away

Hand Me A Light

More Than We Can Handle

Smile
