Here, the line “I am the mother of the evening star / I am the love that conquers all” is “the most defiantly triumphant, hopeful line I've ever written...that's about the birth of my daughter and how that transformed me.” Though they had a fraught relationship, Russell remembers how she’d crawl underneath the piano and listen to her own mother play. “I would hum along with her,” Russell recalls. “She said I was humming before I could talk. Songs like “Gasoline”, “Driven Under”, “Broken (ft. Amy Lee”), “Rise Above This” and “Country Song” are staples in radio rock. Their “greatest hits” collection, titled “Seether 2002-2013” contains every one of these, but there is a second disc, which makes this release a bit more interesting. On it, we have 3 new tracks and several b-sides. They decided to cover their namesake track, Veruca Salt’s “Seether” and throw their personal flavor into it. As they did with George Michael’s “Careless Whisper”, you can definitely feel the Seether vibe on this cover. The 2 other new tracks, “Safe to Say I’ve Had Enough” and “Weak” are similar in design, but definitely a reminder of how incredible and diverse this band can be. “Safe to Say I’ve Had Enough” is acoustically driven, but explodes in the chorus with Shaun Morgan’s incredibly familiar warcry like vocals. “Weak”, on the other hand, is slower and will remind fans of tracks like “Sympathetic”, and some of the slower tracks on their “Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces” album. These 2 tracks are a reminder of how incredible this band is and how much they can adhere to their sound, while finding ways to experiment and keep fans guessing. To my surprise, though, they added one of my absolute favorite Seether tracks, “Out of My Way” (originally on Disclaimer II). It’s an incredibly edgy, angry and underrated track that really shows some of the power that Shaun’s voice has.

Just when you think you’ve got this disc figured out, it goes and throws you a curve ball. A “Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces” b-side called “Blister” hits your ears. Slow, beautiful and melodic, reminiscent of “Driven Under” in some ways, but would have fit perfectly as a bonus track on FBINS. The demos at the end of this disc are pretty incredible as well. Starting with “Burn the Bridges”, progressing into “Butterfly With Teeth” and ending with “Melodious”, it really gives you an idea of how incredible this band can sound, even in a rough setting. Butterfly With Teeth is definitely one of the most beautiful tracks I have ever heard, in terms of instrumentals and lyrics. It showcases the band’s softer side and might even make you shed a few tears! Melodious was a perfect pick to close out disc 2, as it feels like an outro track, rather than an album track. It’s not a filler, but it doesn’t have enough album-like quality to be thrown into the mix with any other album track. That’s not to say it’s a bad track or unworthy of your attention, because it’s definitely one of the best considering it’s a demo.

If you are now or have ever been a Seether fan, “Seether: 2002-2013” is a must-have for your collection! On Seether's 2011 opus, Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray, disillusionment, anger, and pain are central themes. Morgan's writing has always felt real, offering up some of the genres better moments with 2005's Karma and Effect and 2007's Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces. With this opus, Morgan has again struck a chord. "Desire for Need" is a four-on-the-floor rock joint that finds Morgan reaching for falsetto, which adds an alternative, bluesy vibe to the song's feel. Tunes like "Country Song" and "Master of Disaster" are stamped with Dale Stewart's sexy bass grooves as well as anthemic vocals. On the latter, Morgan's vocal melody actually takes on a Queensrÿche feel. One shining moment is the ballad "Pass Slowly." Musically, the band lays down an ethereal groove that reaches its pinnacle behind well-built guitar and bass riffs. Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray is another journey into the mind of Shaun Morgan: through heartbreak and rebirth he still has a lot to say about betrayal. His stamps as guitarist, a songwriter, and a lead vocalist are everywhere on this disc, and thankfully, that's what ultimately drives the release home. - Steve Losey (AllMusic.com)

TRACK LIST:

1. They’re a band that puts the pain back into music, and a really messy year as an outfit has given them some real reasons to be angry. Frontman Shaun Morgan alone has had to deal with a stint in rehab, the suicide of his brother, and most ludicrous of all, having Evanescence’s “Call Me When You’re Sober” penned about him, taking sop-rock to an all new low.

All of these things take impact on Finding Beauty in Negative Spaces. As the biggest band I can remember to ever come out of South Africa, they’re often accused of trying to be that country’s answer to Nirvana, but they’ve gathered a reputation for forcing out some great radio hits through gritted teeth that none can doubt. Their post-grunge appeal is combined with the practicality of a power trio that literally came out of a garage in Pretoria, though they were so far unable to equate their success to a whole LP worth of material.

Here, that problem is fixed. A ringing minor-key guitar riff hardly has time to register before Morgan starts moaning “She’s coming over like a suicide / And it’s the same old trip / The same old trip as before”. “Like Suicide” is a ripping opener (no relation to the Soundgarden song of the same name), and when the hooks hit, shouldered up on disenchanted vocal harmonies, they hit hard. Always a particularly volatile front man, Morgan completely erupts into a scary guttural rasp in the cut’s bridge: “You set me up to fucking fail this time”!

Drummer John Humphrey is a powerful contributor to the mix, his upfront pounding keeping matters turbulent as slivers of melody primly return. Seether is only a three-piece, having lost backing guitarist Pat Callahan after 2005’s Karma & Effect, but the guitars are more reinforced than ever, giving the songs an extra edge. On the bass-driven single “Fake It” Morgan sounds genuinely bitter, spitting an accusatory rant that ranks among the band’s best. While the song is as attractive as having barbed wire twisted in your gut, it’s nonetheless hugely strong and catchy. - Pop Matters

TRACK LIST:

1 Like Suicide
2 Fake It
3 Breakdown
4 FMLYHM
5 Fallen
6 Rise Above This
7 No Jesus Christ
8 Six Gun Quota
9 Walk Away From The Sun
10 Eyes Of The Devil
11 Don't Believe
12 Waste
13 Careless Whisper
14 Careless Whisper - strings version

Release Date: 6/15/2004

Album Description
Disclaimer II is the recompiled, remixed, and expanded take on their 2002 debut, Disclaimer. The songs from the original album have been somewhat reworked, with the band adding additional guitar parts to the mix to help flesh out the songs. The most notable addition comes by way of a second version of "Broken," which transforms the simple acoustic ballad into a massive post-grunge rocker with the help of some big guitars and the even bigger vocals of Evanescence singer Amy Lee. While there are a lot of throaty yells similar to Korn, there is a lot of angst driven momentum more in line with Alice In Chains. It is not overt, but it is a brilliant subtlety that lasts through the record - setting it apart from all of the posers currently playing out there. In addition, Rateliff’s close friend Kevin Morby, who was set to open the cancelled Red Rocks dates in August 2020, joins him for a duet on Leonard Cohen’s “There Is A War.”
The cast of musicians includes Rateliff (guitar) with fellow Night Sweats members Joseph Pope III (bass), Mark Shusterman (keys), Patrick Meese (drums, keys, guitar) and Luke Mossman (guitar) along with James Barone (drums, guitar), Joy Adams (cello), Rachel Sliker (viola), Adrienne Short (violin) and Chris Jusell (violin).

TRACK LISTING

Tonight #2

All Or Nothing

Expecting To Lose

Shroud

You Need Me

Right On

What A Drag

Still Out There Running

Early Spring Till

Kissing Our Friends

Oil & Lavender

This

There Is A War

Mavis

Still Trying

And It’s Still Alright

Time Stands

Rush On

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

“I didn’t set out to write “That Spell” based on any central theme, but instead, I wrote songs about the state of the world around me. The last four years has left us to think about what we really stand for and the issues we need to speak out against. Some of these songs explicitly respond to the problems of inequality, global warming, sexism, and other current issues while other songs are moments in my life I personally experienced. When I read the poem “The Wait,” by Rainer Maria Rilke this March, it struck me as the perfect poem to describe the situation we were all experiencing. When I watched the movie “Parasite” I was inspired by the way water was used as a metaphor for class inequality and felt compelled to write “Water Flowing Downward” the next day. Celilo was written after I watched a documentary called, “Damnation” that spoke to the selfish ways humans have consumed the earth. And “Carolina” is a song I wrote because I remembered the way my Mom would sing along to James Taylor in the car. These songs are a collection of thoughts and while many of them mean something certain to me, my hope is that the listener can find these songs meaningful in their own personal way.” – Andrea von Kampen

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0529/8133/4207/products/AVK-THAT_SPELL-Cover_TIFF_RGB-5x5in-600dpiSHOPIFY.png?v=1622758656
interrobang
interrobang - Digital Album

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Brimming with child-like imagination and a futuristic mindset, Switchfoot reaches a bold new creative peak on interrobang, the 12th full-length album of the multi-platinum selling rock band’s 20+ year career. The band teamed with ace producer Brendan O’Brien (Springsteen, Pearl Jam) to deliver one of the most poignant, passionate, and powerful records of their career. Coming off 2011’s highly successful ‘Holding Onto Strings Better Left to Fray’, the band felt unusually restless. Long considered one of alternative rock’s most formidable units, Seether knew it was time for a change. In order to limit the distractions, front man Shaun Morgan began construction on a musical refuge in his New Hampshire home. “I actually built a room that I could write in,” he recalls. “I personally pulled out the carpet, put in wood flooring, decorated, and painted. After getting off the road, it was a process of preparation to get the environment just right. I made a place that I felt comfortable and creative in. I was able to be safe and isolated, concentrating on writing music instead of dealing with the distractions that come with daily life.” Morgan emerged with a collection of fleshed-out ideas that the musicians honed during rehearsals together in drummer John Humphrey’s native Oklahoma. By the time they assembled with O’Brien to record the album at Hollywood’s Henson Studios in January 2014, their vision and determination had clearly come into focus. We play some traditional blues on stage from time to time and although it’s usually never more than a few songs per show, our approach to the blues is unique and based on our collective chemistry as a band.” He adds, “This album gave us a mission. Although in some way it was ‘anything goes,’ we wanted to stay true to the spirit of the blues in a traditional sense. It’s not a blues/rock record – it's a blues record. We wanted it sonically to sound different from a normal Gov’t Mule record.”

Though technically considered a studio album, Heavy Load Blues was recorded live in the studio at The Power Station New England on analog tape, utilizing vintage guitars, amps and other equipment to capture an authentic sound. The 13-track album was produced by Haynes alongside engineer and co-producer John Paterno (Michael Landau, Robbie Williams, The Steve Gadd Band).

One of the many standout tracks is the Junior Wells standard “Snatch It Back and Hold It,” which allowed the band to freely cover a classic while sandwiching a spontaneous jam called “Hold It Back” in the middle of a soulful, stirring interpretation that was given a decidedly funky groove. In that regard, while several titles may sound familiar to blues enthusiasts, the band – Haynes, Matt Abts [drums], Danny Louis [keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals], and Jorgen Carlsson [bass] – often opted to put its own spin on them. “I Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home,” originally recorded by Ann Peebles, is one of the few songs on the record the band has previously played live. On their version, Haynes’ nimble guitar riffs are played out over a solid foundation of organ and rhythm, resulting in a kind of funk-like finesse. For the Howlin’ Wolf song, “I Asked Her For Water, She Gave Me Gasoline,” Gov’t Mule, who are known for pushing the parameters while melding a variety of genres — rock, R&B, jam, funk, jazz, and practically everything in-between, opted for a heavy, up-tempo and funky version that is a far cry from the original.

Heavy Load Blues Digital Track Listing:

1.Blues Before Sunrise 3:44
2. She focused on a deleted scene, in which one-character attempts to comfort another in a time of trauma by reminding them that the world is chaotic, that questioning why bad things happen is pointless in a world where the roof could just fall on you at any moment. “We need to accept that we can’t have our minds fixated on all these things that could happen, and we need to move on—but also the ceiling could just collapse,” she laughs. In addition, the Peace…Like A River Deluxe Edition (available on CD only) includes the original 12-track album plus the special 5-track Time Of The Signs Bonus EP, which features four brand-new, unreleased tracks and an alternate version of the album track “The River Only Flows One Way,” with Warren taking lead vocals.

“Peace…Like A River is very ambitious from a musical arrangement standpoint in the way that a lot of the songs take twists and turns that is not common in today’s pop music world,” shared Haynes. “At the same time, it’s very much a song record and covers a lot of ground, stylistically speaking. Song for song maybe my favorite one.”

The tracks on Peace…Like A River explore the many sides of Gov’t Mule and bring together all the qualities that have earned the four-piece - Haynes [guitar, vocals], Matt Abts [drums], Danny Louis [keyboards, guitar, and backing vocals], and Jorgen Carlsson [bass] – the beloved stature they enjoy today. Concise songcraft coexists seamlessly with the band’s trademark instrumental journeys. Songs longer than pop convention are somehow still compact: they’re explorative but never meandering; the tunes are at once both wide-ranging and tightly focused. Thematically, the new album explores the seismic changes the world has gone through over the past few years. Influenced both in his songwriting and playing by what Haynes calls “the golden era of rock, soul, jazz and blues,” Gov’t Mule combines the best and most enduring qualities from all those musical strains to create a timeless piece of art on Peace…Like A River that could have easily been released during rock ‘n roll’s classic 70’s classic.

Peace…Like A River was recorded during the same sessions as Heavy Load Blues at The Power Station New England with co-producer John Paterno (Elvis Costello, Bonnie Raitt, Los Lobos) alongside Haynes. Billy F Gibbons’ trademark vocals underscore the tasty ZZ Top textures that inform the humor-infused “Shake Our Way Out,” while Billy Bob Thornton adds his distinctive vocals to “The River Only Flows One Way.” For introductory track “Dreaming Out Loud,” Haynes wanted a Sly and the Family Stone vocal style where different singers take different sections of the song, so he called upon previous collaborators blues great Ruthie Foster, whose backing vocals graced Mule’s 2006 album High & Mighty, and longtime friend, New Orleans soul legend, Ivan Neville. We started “Clever Girl” with a desire for a robotic dance song, after a lull of only writing ballads and mid-tempo grooves. We were listening to The Bravery a lot at that time, so the repetitive downstroke nature of the guitars happened organically. In those moments where we feel abandoned & hollow, a small sliver remains intact, preserved, and personal.” As the record explores everything from power dynamics to a betrayal by a loved one, The Half We Still Have is a searing, empathetic work of musical non-fiction, and just the beginning of an immensely bright future to come.

The Half We Still Have - Track list:
1.
